How to keep on track during celebrations
Right lads, we all know the score. Birthday parties, holidays, match days, or just a mate getting married, there is always some reason to celebrate. And where there is celebration, there is usually cake, booze, and buffets that look like they were designed by the gods themselves.
Don’t worry. You don’t have to treat yourself like a human vacuum to enjoy it. You can have your cake, literally, and eat it too, without undoing all the hard work you have put in. Here is how to survive celebrations like a champ.
Plan Ahead, Be Tactical
Going in hungry is like starting a match without warming up. It never ends well.
- Eat a balanced meal before the event: think protein, veg, fibre. This way, you are not queuing up for the buffet like a bloke possessed.
- Decide in advance which treats are worth it. Pick your battles. One slice of cake or a handful of crisps is fine. The whole tray might be regrettable.
Top tip: Pretend your weigh-in is watching you. You do not want to let it down.
Keep Moving, Even Slightly
You do not need to run a marathon between canapé rounds, but small wins count.
- Walk around and chat instead of sitting at the table all night.
- Dance a bit or help set up or clear plates. It counts as movement.
- Take stairs instead of lifts if the venue has them.
Remember: every step you take is like scoring a point against temptation. Even a small gain is still a win.
Drink Smart
Booze is sneaky. Those calories add up faster than a counterattack!
- Alternate alcohol with water.
- Choose lower-calorie options if you can, or stick to one or two drinks you really enjoy instead of sampling everything.
- Never forget, hydration helps control appetite and keeps your brain thinking straight.
Top tip: Pretend each glass of water is a yellow card for temptation. It keeps you honest.
Portion Control, Not Denial
You are not a monk. Enjoy the food, but keep it reasonable.
- Start with smaller portions, savour every bite, and pause before seconds.
- Fill your plate with veg first. Yes, it is boring compared to the chocolate fountain, but it is a shield for your goals.
- Be mindful when snacking. Do not nibble endlessly while talking.
Pro tip: Eat with your eyes, not just your hands. You are more satisfied when you actually notice what you are eating.
Mindset Matters
Celebrations are temporary. Your goals are long-term.
- One night of indulgence will not ruin your progress. It is consistency over time that counts.
- Stay connected to your teammates. Chat, share your wins, and get encouragement if things feel tricky.
- Think of your choices as smart passes in a game. You are not avoiding fun. You are staying in control.
Remember: Every time you resist a second helping, your future self does a little victory dance.
Reset After the Celebration
The night is over. Do not let it linger.
- Get back to your usual routine immediately. Do not wait until Monday.
- Drink water, have a balanced meal, and move your body.
- Update your health check in your MAN v FAT members area to see how you did. Tracking your wins and slip-ups helps you plan better for the next event.
